Crank but NO start

CA has really strict smog laws and i'm trying to sell the truck and have a guy interested coming to look at it this weekend. i'd rather spend the 20 minutes to lift the bed and do a stock replacement pump than mess with an aftermarket inline set up.

i could also be really lucky and have these two problems be 100% unrelated since the no start was gone for about a week. i always keep my door open when i start the truck and yesterday/the day before was the first time i can remember hearing the pump prime but the sound not get deeper as pressure built. i learned to listen for the sound the first time my pump started dying.

Have the issue with a 99 ranger 3.0...had it fixed...worked for 6 months and doing it again. Mechanic replaced the anti-theft switches (in door) and had no troubles through the fall and winter.
...went to Sprouts. Came out to the ranger and it started fine...then made a stop at Wal-Mart for about 5 minutes. Came out and the ranger would not start. First trouble in 6+ months...
Tried pumping the gas pedal...still would not start.
I remembered my mechanic replaced anti-theft system parts 6 months ago.
So I left the key all the way on in accessory until the check engine light came on...then I tried starting the ranger and it started right up.
The check engine light went off and it ran fine...
Going to let it sit for a while and see if it starts...I’m told codes are only available from a OBD scanner when the check engine light comes on. May invest in a OBD scanner
