Crank but NO start

2005 xlt 3.0 w/ auto trans, 2wd. almost 114k miles

recently replaced:
cam position sensor
crank position sensor
fuel pump relay
battery w/in 3 months
ford fuel pump w/in the last year
fuel filter w/in the last 3 months

cleaned the MAF, IAC.

truck will crank, but won't start randomly. this morning it started first try, ran great. drove 30 min then shut the truck off for maybe 10 minutes, then cranked and wouldn't start. tried again and fired up no problems, didn't run rough. never has thrown any codes, and checked for existing codes but didn't find any. if it sits for a few hours on hot days, it'll do the same no start BS.

if i press the gas pedal, it still won't start which tells me it isn't the IAC. i can hear the fuel pump kick on, and it's building pressure. what else could it be? Ignition Control Module? Coil? Been researching online for weeks and replacing things one by one, but they never fix it lol.

pull a plug and chk for spark if spark then fuel, chk fuses too
 
i did all the stuff you did too mac, i think its a problem with the fuel rail

edit: and all the stuff they mentioned, pulled the plugs eveything all looks fine
 
warm or cold, i just have to be lucky to make it happen. i can walk out after the truck's been sitting all night and it'll just crank, drive 30 minutes and it'll crank on restart, or if it's sitting in the hot sun (been 90-100 here recently) for a few hours it'll happen too. but there's no pattern to it. hopefully it's not like justin's problem.

could old plug wires cause this? cuz it's not the coil.

and also, i replaced the sensor on top of the cam synchro, not the whole spinny bit that goes connects to the cam.

An old plug shouldn't cause that issue but I have seen weird stuff.

To me it sounds like something involved when you did cam and crank position sensor.

Maybe a loose or bad ground somewhere when putting things back together or when doing the work? That can cause some retarded issues even though it sounds like such a dumb small thing.

it had the no start issue before the cam/crank sensors were changed. that was the reason they were replaced.

mine has a strong crank, but it will turn over and over on the first crank, if i prime the fuel pump 3-4 times, it starts no problem.

no its not that, i had that problem and fixed it with the new fuel pump. that's your pump slowly dieing lol
 
it was the spark plug wires. ford picked a genius way to route them across the back of the motor so that they rub on the trans dipstick. one of the wires was almost rubbed through the insulation. never found it since i put my spark test light on a different cylinder.

good find. I assume this spark plug wire setup is unique to the 3L ;)
 
I'm having the same problem as Justincredible except my fuel pump is new. Hard start whether it is cold or hot. Usually takes one or two tries...sometimes 3. Just cranks. New fuel pump, filter, plugs, wires ect. No code is set. It never used to do this and just started. After it starts it runs fine. I inspected the IAC Valve and cleaned it up but this didnt help. Any info you could pass on would be a great help

i'm right back in the same boat as you again. didn't do it after i replaced the plug wires until 2 days ago. cranked 2 different times on friday and would start till the 2nd or 3rd try. last night i went to a concert and after 6 hours went out to start the truck and it just cranked the first time. was idling a lot in the lot waiting for people to leave, turned the truck off once and it took 3 times to restart it.

getting reaaaaaaaaaaally effing pissed off.
 
i'm leaning towards it being the nice and expensive ford fuel pump i just replaced 15 months ago. if that's it, i'm gonna be so unbelievably stoked that i get to spend that kinda money again.

i think it's the stupid one way valve that keeps pressure in the lines when the pump primes the system. which is the same thing that failed and caused me to replace the pump in the first place.

F*CK trucks.
 
why not put an electric aftermarket pump in? a mechanic friend of mine in MO replaced a few ranger fuel pumps with the right pressure electric in line pump.
just a thought, as I never did it.
