93 Auto transmission works in 2nd n and reverse, not in the others..

First I will start off by stating that I have never been mechanically inclined. But I do follow directions very well. I got this little orange beauty a week or so back and she will not move in OD or D. Reverse is ok, I start off in second and then I can column shift her into drive and she will keep going. She will only get up to maybe 2nd gear and then her RPM's go to about 3000 and I can drop into overdrive and she will gear up and the RPM's drop to under 1K. Did I mention that this is an automatic? I don't believe I am supposed to be doing all this shifting, but I dont want to blow a head gasket or anything. REverse no problem, 2nd u can start and then put in drive to go to next gear up and OD for higher gears (haven't hit the actual OD gear yet). I have been looking everywhere for a decent priced/runnning used tranny but no luck. Is there something else I can try to help this transmission isssue until I can get her a new one? Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed!!!!!!! Hardly any rust on frame and body is almost perfect for a 21 year old!

Sounds like slippage inside the old trans.
Try the oil/filter change thing, if no go, try either a pro-flush at a good reliable shop or a new trans.

I was just thinking on it and remembered I had a '98, trans went, only forward gears, got a trans from the JY, never had another problem.
 
Think that is the best plan to follow. When I cleaned out the bed, there were 2 large coffee cans full of black liquid (they did not smell burnt), a portion of a seal and a trans. filter. I believe that someone at some time attempted to change the tr fluid. There was less than a full can of liquid in both containers. I bet if I have it done professionally they wil get more old fluid out, leaving mosst of the old fluid inside. There couldnt have been ore than 2-3 quarts that came out. Lets hope this works, as I am having a bear of a time tracking down an auto A4DL trans in my area!
Is there anything visible (when they remove the pan) that could give me an idea as to wether a new tranny is needed, or if a rebuild kit will work?
 
Just me but if there is a burnt smell and you are going nowhere in D then I would start the search for another.

Is there a pro shop for auto trans rebuilds in your area.
Wouldn't hurt to check them out, the cost of a rebuilt on your tranny just might be in the same price as a JY Unit and the install.
Doesn't hurt to check it out though.

We have a local guy who does autos on the side, 7 day turn around and he does great work. His prices are far below a pro shop doing it, if you can find one of these guys in your area, maybe that is another source to check out.

Alway have a few options open, then you can make a good choice.
 
Fortunately, no burnt smell, the transmission fluid looks almost like it was put in yesterday. Even though it has been probably a year since it was replaced. I live inn a very rural area and most mechanics around here are self taught. The closest "transmission specialist" is at least 90 miles away. I am traveling there tomorrow to see what they may have to offer. My mechanic recommended that I go ahead and switch it over to a standard, which I would rather had. I hope to see some options tomorrow, so wish me luck, maybe I will luck out and find what I need. At least there are 46, 000 people in our capitol city of Charleston. Thanks for all your help and input!
 
ok have found a transmission out of an explorer sport (98) though the tranny is dated 96, ithas the same transfer caseand it iss a 4.0l 6 cyl, will thisfit the 93?

I don't know about Fitment of a '98 in a '93, sorry.
My thought is get the trans with a return option, then take your and compare to two.

What happened to the manual trans ?
