A moderator is someone you applies the rules, makes sure threads are categorized correctly, threads staying on topic, making sure people behave and also certain mods run certain contests. There is alot a moderator does behind the scenes to make sure the site stays clean and on topic.

What we have been doing is the admins and other mods recommend someone to be appointed to that and its discussed from there. We do it at the time when an extra set of hands are needed for the site, the more it grows, the more mods we need.
 
Yeah, I'm sure having an extra mod on board is a huge help.
Especially asthis place grows, and it surely is =)
