replacing transmission pan gasket

today with my truck on the lift i had my teacher look at the pan and he said that the gasket is bad and needs to be replaced. is it as simple as un bolt the pan, drop it, replace the gasket, bolt it back up, then refill? also is there some kind of filter that i should replace it while im in there? is there any brand of fluid that is recommended.

whenever you drop the pan make sure you let it stop dripping before you apply the new gasket and replace the pan otherwise you would be tearing it back down in the near future to replace the gasket again....

alright will do thanks for the tip. i think im going to drop the tranny pan then do my transfer case while im letting that drain. or start to do my differential while i let this drain.

i did this job today and it was a day from hell. the tranny pan went off and back on fine. then i started filling it with fluid. for some reason my manual was wrong that told me 2.5 quarts for my tranny. i ended up using 3.5 also apparently my power steering cap wasnt on all the way. so when it was being pulled forward the cap flew off and my power steering emptied itself all over my engine bay. so in the near future im going to have to clean my engine bay. eventually i got the job done. makes me kind of discouraged to do my differential.

You got it done and you changed the filter, good deal.
The PS Fluid will help keep things shiny but clean it up as soon as possible.

I didin’t see your thread on the gasket change I would have (I know should’ve, would’ve, could’ve) on all cock/paper gaskets I use Hy-Tack Gasket Coating.
It is red (not Ranger E4 Red) and it is Sticky as hell.

I use the Hy-Tack on the side cover of my harley and it sealed up the leaks, great stuff !

Good you got it done !

It's running bad again. After sitting cold all night it shifted at 10 mph when it normally shifts at 30 mph also it shifted very hard and took a while to shift.

If your instructor has the equipment, try a flush of the trans, clean the filter too.
Also, I missed the fluid you used, was it a Ford type of product ?

the dip stick said i was full and it was driving fine last night. this morning when i got it in it started shifting weird. no i didnt have the equipment to flush the transmission.

get the truck & trans warmed up and check it while it's running. add some more mercon fluid as needed. i think mine wound up using 4 quarts but it's been so long i can't remember. all i know is i also didin't buy enough, lol.

Yea the Haynes manual was wrong I think I'll end up using 4 also. I have 3.5 in but it needs more. I only check it when it's running. I can't wait to be done with this hopefully I don't have this many issues when I do my differential.

i just had one of the scariest rides of my life. the truck was running fine until i got onto a main road. where it started to seem like it was redlining and would not shift. then my o/d off light started blinking at me. i shut it off and the light went away.

Well since you haven’t really had many rides I would think you are in for scarier ones to come.

How long was it between this fluid/filter change and the last ?

Why you as… SOMETIMES, when the trans, almost any fluids, are not changed they leave deposits. They appear to run fine but when you finally change the fluid the deposits drain out too and things start to slip, not shift, start to wear or show signs of wear. The wear was there but the deposits took up the space and now you get all of the troubles.

I hope it is something small and not what I stated above or that was overlooked and can be fixed.

Luck on it all.
