ignition module

Where is the ignition module on a 95 ranger, 2.3, 5 speed? Engine died instantly the other day and that seems to be a good place to start. Advance said they can test it if i bring it in but ive looked in all the places ive read to look and no luck. The dealership said it would be on the drivers side of the block but no luck. Im going out in a bit to take a few parts off and see if i overlooked it. Any help would be great. Thanks,

Well let's take this step by step instead of jumping to conclusions.

1. Does it turn over
2. Do you have spark
3. Do you have fuel
 
Next step

Do a tune up (wires, cap/rotor and/or plugs may be shot )

Get your coil tested. They dont fail very often but when they do, it's at a very inconvenient time.

This ALSO sounds like it could be a crank positioning sensor problem. (as in there's no spark)
 
wires are new, plugs a few months old. no distributor but i checked resistance on the two coil packs and they seem fine. i also considered the crank position sensor. i actually have one on the old engine i replaced and was thinking about changing it to see if that fixed it. i just thought i would get the ignition module tested. ive heard thats a fairly common problem.
 
Well since you have a crank position sensor laying around, why not try that first before going out and spending money if you don't have to.
 
no luck after changing crankshaft position sensor. hooked a code reader up and it wouldnt connect. kind of getting worried computer is bad. may just take it to a shop instead of throwing parts at it
 
Try hooking up the code reader again. You might not have plugged it in right the first time. And if it turns over, your computer isnt bad.
 
The dual ignition on my 94 was on the drivers side, it was a while ago when I replaced it, but I believe it was rearward of the power steering pump, down mounted to a bracket off the intake manifold.
 
the ignition module on the 91 i am working on is on the driverside of the truck just behind the alternator and above the coil pack on that side.

p.s. did you get this fixed yet and if so what was the trouble? i am working on a friends ranger and have similar problems.
 
I'm not sure where it is, but I want to warn you of something. Your problem seems to be the same that I used to have. I got the ignition module replaced, but still broke down often. What ended up happening was that it was my starter that needed replacing and I also got a new relay installed. I don't know if those might help you at all, but I thought I'd let you know my experience.
