    Hello,
I just purchased a 2002 4WD stepside. I only have one key for the truck, and it has a crack in it.
    A. Does the key have a transponder chip in it?
    B. If so, do I need to visit the dealer to get a new key?
    Thanks in advance.

Mine's 2005 no chip. Got a spare key at Home Depot.

My truck is a 02' & it has a chip. I went to Lowes to get a key made. They wanted $75 for mine. They'll be able to tell you when they look your key up

Your key should have a chip in the key. If you take the cracked one to a locksmith they can extract the chip and install it in a new key and cut the key to match yours. Mine cost $65 a couple years back. It was cheaper than buying a new chipped key and syncing the new chip to the truck because they are only sold as a pair for $250 at that time.

A cheaper alternative is to tape the cracked chip key to a new unchipped key or very close to the ignition lock ( obviously removing the key portion and only using the top peice that contains the chip) then you can use the home depot or lowes key that doesn't contain a chip. It'll work as long as the chipped one is in close proximity.
