When I fill the tank to the top (or close to) fuel leaks from the bottom of the truck. I generally only put 10 gallons in, so it is not a big issue (except for the leaking combustable liquid).

The issue is finding the leak. It only leaks when I fill the tank, but I cant really spend time under the truck at the gas station. And when the tank is full, it is rather heavy if I were to take it off the truck. I notice a gas smell on hot days when I have the rear window open, so I'd like to get it fixed.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to find the leak?
 
You don't list a location nor truck information...



But assuming this is a Ranger, what may be the case is the thin sheet metal filler neck that the fuel cap screws into and the rubber hoses attach to. May have rusted through or a weld may have failed. Not a cheap part to replace unfortunately. Or it could be any of the joints between the fuel cap and the fuel tank or the filler hose itself. Could be possible someone may have attempted to steal fuel and slice the rubber hoses. This happened to by brother on his Ranger and it was a quick fix from the plumbing area at Home Depot.

There's many guesses we can all take, but there's only one real way to investigate, and that's inspection. Worse case to inspect yourself, remove the bed. It's just three screws, one electrical plug, and 6 or 8 bolts depending on bed length to remove the bed. Take dropping of the gas tank off the list.
 
My first guess is the Filler Hose, second guess could be the sending unit gasket.

Does the gas drip from under the truck when filling, if so the filler hose is cracked.

As Shane has stated, only way to find out is either lift the bed or put the truck on the lift and see what’s up !
 
The rubber hose split on my 97....I waited until it was almost out of gas and dropped the tank. I didn't have any help, so lifting the bed was not an option for me. I used a floor jack and a 2x8 to help drop and lift the fuel tank.
