bleed power steering

Draining and refilling the power steering reservoir is described in the Chilton manual as part of the steering rack change-out procedure for my 98 Ranger. In considering doing the change-out myself, my concern is of the bleeding of the air in the system afterwards. The easy (professional way) described is to use a vacuum pump. Problem is I don't have one and can't really afford to just run out and buy one. Is there a reliable alternative method to do so without the use of a vacuum pump? Jack the front tires off the ground. Top off fluid. Turn vehicle on and keep in park. Turn the wheel complete lock to lock until the bubbles are gone in the system.
