So i bought my 2000 ranger last fall, and when loading the truck last week i heard that horrible sound of rust falling to the ground. I pulled out the mat, and there, at the front of the bed, was a huge spot. Can this be fixed? i thought about spot welding a piece of sheet metal over it, but is there a better way?

When u say "bed mat" do you mean that thick plastic drop in bed liner?
Those things are horrible, i took mine out of my truck as soon as i got it.

As for your rust/hole issue, its fixable if you can weld... cut out the bad stuff.. weld in a patch..

welding a new piece should be simple, just gotta find a free day to get it done. thanks. and i figure the mat is better than a naked bed; id much rather have a hard liner, but it is what it is.

put a hard liner in its not hard just time consuming. Sand all paint of clean real good and roll on and spray some bedliner in and itll help from getting anymore rust

No i am pretty sure a naked bed is way better, lol so water/moisture can actually dry faster, instead of lingering on under/in a matt.

Like people who put on those leather or vinyl front bras on their cars and trucks to protect the paint from debris and stuff.... only to find out when they take the bra off, the bra has rubbed and scratched the paint raw and has done more damage than good.
My bud had a sweet white 92 camaro z28, he put on that black bra thing up front, had it on for a year and took it off to clean, and it had rubbed the paint down to the bare metal and looked like crap... he was so pissed, lol.

As for the bed matt and hard drop in bed liners... only good for short term use, throw them in when hauling wood and stuff for work, but don't leave in all the time...

yea this is how i feel about it... my bed is rusting out, in open areas but also on the seams where the sides meet the bottom panel. to do like hurcliner on it, unless i totally cut out the rust its still gonna either come through or eat from the other side...

heres what ive got, sorry for the crap quality of the itouch
