Tried doing a search, but couldn't find anything specific to my problem.

I have a 1996 ranger 4wd xlt. I seem to have a problem getting my 4wd to engage after I apply my brakes in snow and slide a bit. Is there some connection between the operation of the ABS brakes and the 4wd?
It seems that if I park the truck and restart it a little while later, the 4wd will then engage. This is quite aggravating because it has happened 3 times this winter when I needed the 4wd the most. Edited to add that it is an automatic.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

Hmm....there really is no direct connection between the 2 systems...the front hubs are mechanical so maybe if your sliding its causing them to unlock....
