95 ranger began to run rough now won't start

I have a 95 ranger, 4X4, ext. cab, 4.0 V6, with 200,000 miles. It had sat for almost 9 months when I bought it. After purchase I changed the gas, fuel filter, and fuel pump. It ran several times when I decided to take it to another location to work on it more. Shortly in to this 2 mile drive the truck began to smoke and miss. By the time I had finished the drive the truck would not run without my foot flat on the floor. Even then it didn't get much above 1200 rpm's. It then began to worse and will not even start at this point. I've tried to start it without touching the pedal or with the pedal on the floor. I've check that it is getting air and I removed the front driver side spark plug to insure it is getting spark. I put some B-12 chemtool in the tank, and still can not get it to start. I'm at a loss. Please help.
 
What color was the smoke? did you check the oil? Could be the injection computer. can't think of much else, I own an 88 so mine isn't as technical.
 
The smoke was either blackish or blue depending on how hard the truck was working to either go up a grade or drift down one. The oil is spot on. It is not low, discolored, or showing signs of an engine in its death throes. It does have spark and 2 separate local mechanics said it could be as simple as needing to change out the spark plugs. Thanks for the suggestion.
 
Update: I changed the spark plugs and it fired up instantly. Unfortunately, it started to smoke and knock again within just over a minute. This time I wasn't driving and could see that the engine is loading up with fuel to the point it is coming out the exhaust pipe. So, now I know it is getting spark, fuel and air. I checked the oil again and it was fine again. The smoke was definitely unburned fuel. The question now becomes, what would make the engine load up with fuel like that? There were no dash lights on to tell me the truck is throwing any kind of code. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
Funny, mine started acting up two days ago doing the same thing (minus the knocking) smoking like a diesel, running with a throb, liquid in the tailpipe, etc.... I took it out on a little backroad outside of town and let er rip. ran it around 3g's and 20 min later it quit smoking.Could be a delivery problem but I think it could be the CAT could be suffocating your motor.Mine needs the CAT replaced. might try that. otherwise, build up. what rpm's do you shift at? or is it an automatic?
 
Actually in the time since my last post I replaced the fuel pressure regulator. It smoke a bit more then leveled off. Took another look at my plugs and discovered I have orange spark. I'm going to clean the plugs and replace the wires and will update from there.
