stalls when idling, can here backfiring through the intake. Decided to check timing, is this correct?

I disco'd the SPOUT connector ( I think, I followed the pink wire in the diagram FORDTECH1 posted, and found a single connector, with 2 pink wires, had a single plastic plug)

I then checked the timing with the light, and the plastic guide was labelled BTC---->20--->10--->TC

The mark was showing halfway between 10 and 20. While idling, the engine would "stutter" and the line would drop down to TC

With the SPOUT in, it was idling @ 20

I had the same engine, same problem in my old truck. Spent a thousand dollars trying to trouble shoot it when it turns out I had a bad coil pack, plugs and wires. Your problem sounds just like my truck so try looking at those simple things first

I did. I originally found no spark on exhaust side on 2 cylinders. swapped pack, same issue. Changed ICM, now has spark. till runs bad. Changed IAC valve and coolant sensor.

Thats when I decided to check timing.
