Just my 2 cents, a older 289 like your talking about would be better for a different project, I think a better donor could be more easily found in the yard. Check that explorer 5.0 - it sounds like a much better fit!

Take a look at Akebono - they claim to be made 100% in the United States. Myself, I have not tried them but in my 1991 Ranger 4X4 rebuild I think I'm going to give them a try. Best of luck!
