I had the same problem in an older Mazda, and it ended up being the head gasket. I didn't take care of it soon enough and I ended up with a blown engine.

I started my 99 Ranger single cab 4.0 4x4 automatic and it wont budge in any gear. When I put it in drive, it lurches forward a few inches then stops like it hit a rock. It does budge in neutral even when being pushed. I waited until the truck was up to temp, ran it through all gears leaving it...
