1996 Ford Ranger xlt

    It will turn over but will not start. Sprayed starting fluid but still would not start. Could it be a short.

    Is it firing? Do you have sufficient fuel pressure?

    Check that your ecm relay is grounding. Had the same problem on my '93 4.0l. Being a '96 you should have obd2, I think. Check for codes, one may be present that hasn't set the light. If you've got a tool fancy enough, check for crank and cam signals.

    I like an ol fuel pressure gauge attached to the fuel rail to tell ya exactly what your pressure is! ZappyBear is on to something! My almost son inlaw had an escort that just cranked and cranked but would not fire up, I looked at it, listened to the injectors (nothing) checked the coil (no fire) On the crankshaft sensor there were two wires, one wire was broken = No Crank Signal!
