Alternator swap questions...

Discussion in 'Electrical' started by Redneck_ranger, Apr 22, 2012.

  1. Down at the junk yard today I found that most of the Expos have the OHV engine. Would the alternator from the 4.0 OHV bolt up to my SOHC?

Well this thread is null, I found an explorer with the exact same engine as mine that's about an 03? $35 for it only, so next time I come up to the yard I'll be grabbing that.

I'd rather spend the $130 for a brand new alternator with lifetime warranty from my local auto parts store, than risk a failure going with a junkyard unit.

Now if the junkyard unit looks as though it's a recent replacement, by all means, grab it. No warranty for you but at least you know she's a pretty new part as opposed to a 140k or whatever used alt.

Not sure on how old it is, but it didn't seem too old.

grab it and get it tested, worst is that you have to get it rebuilt

thats what i did with the vw grabbed an alt for $10 got it tested and found out it was dead sent it to a guy up here who rebuilt it for $50 so i got a brand new one for $60 instead of $600 for one they have to get in germany because my car was built over there and they dont stock those parts here

I pick one up from the junkyard, then have a buddy rebuild it for part price. $30 usually.

I wanna get a 200 amp at some point...

Me too. I plan on running a winch at some point and more lights, so I'm gonna need it.

No. More engine load for no purpose. I can run a 200A alt and keep the same belt and everything.

Because I am losing power as it is. I don't want to lose more with more engine load.

I'd rather spend the $30 on a junkyard alt, and have the rebuilder in town go through it instead of getting Chinamart. On that note. as long as the housing mounts are the same, they will swap.
