Humming noise

1998 XLT Super
Hey,i have a 98 XLT Super cab 2x4 with a 3.0 ,has only 59k on it.Have a humming noise (similar to a low p/steer whine) that i hear at idle and slow speed. This is not the fuel pump, the noise sounds like at rear of engine or bell housing .Sound travels into drive shaft which has me stumped.I replaced the cam synchronizer and also a new Motorcraft IAC.After i changed the IAC it was gone a month or so ,but has now returned. Now i don't hear it at idle,do hear at lower RPM . Any ideas ,Thanks !!

Yea,when i was hearing at idle i could raise it on a lift at work and hear hear around the bell housing and in the driveshaft. It has a very slight rear main leak,I'm wondering id it's the seal making the noise ? In past I've seen front main make odd noise's .When i first got the truck about 7 years ago i read something somewhere about a bushing or something in the input or tail shaft of these 4 speed auto trans that had a possible problem ? Now can not find anything about this . Any ideas ? Thanks !!

Could just be the gears, could also be a bearing somewhere? I doubt it's the pinion seal (altho i would get that fixed)

Does it happen when you have the clutch engaged, disengaged, or both?

In neutral or only in gear?

Me to and i work on cars every day ! It weird how i can't make it do it sitting still now, could be same type noise ,but another ? Now i hear it a lower speeds (like in neighborhood) when hit a certain RPM.Have a Miracle Ear listen device at work and still couldn't pinpoint it!

Now about decided it is not the same noise i heard before,i hear it only when driving at 2000 to 2200 rpm .Strongly think it's in my Flowmaster Delta Flow,my be a chamber wall broken loose ?

I also found a rattle I've had for a long time, after the last cat. there's some type of silencer mounted to the pipe and i removed it.Truck is much quieter at idle, this thing is clamped to the pipe and has like a round can at the end of it.You can shake it and rattles ! Anyone know exactly what it's purpose is ?

Looks very similar to this, learned it's used as a vibration /noise damper.
My truck has always had a light rattling noise in exhaust, not no more !Now i may swap out the Flowmaster with a Dynomax ,if i figure out it's the other noise ?
