Couple O' things need fixen.

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Redneck_ranger, Feb 15, 2012.

  1. Alright, so my pinion seal or something right there is leaking gear oil again, and the seal is brand new. Anyone know what that is?

And also, when I step on it, my belt squeals around 3500-4000+ and then if the RPMs get high enough, it turns into a metallic screeching noise. Really hard to describe... But I can't even pass people on the highway without it doing it, and I don't wanna push it because I don't want a blown engine. Anybody have this problem before? And no, it does not need belt dressing. I have put it on before and it only stops the belt squeal, not the metallic.

as far as the squealing have you checked the idler or tensioner bearing? and the pinion seal did you have it done at a shop or did you do it your self? either way it could have been pinched during installation.

Shop did it when they replaced my thermo housing. It could have been... It's only a 14 dollar fix though. And for the pulley/tensioner, I haven't checked them, but the kid I bought it from said it was replaced already.

Alright. What should I look for? Play? Wear? And I might be going to a JY, so could I pull on off of any 4.0 Ranger/Exploder/Mountaineer?

look for play in the pulley's and pull the belt off of them and spin them and see if they sound dry/metal to metal...

As for the pinion seal, that has to be perfectly installed. You need to have it square when you install it. Also the pinion nut has to be torqed properly to ensure bearing preload in the bearings.

The garage put it on for me. If I'm looking at the right thing, it looks like it isn't on straight. Gapped more from the diff housing at the bottom. Any way I can just take a screwdriver and pop it back in place?

No! You dont want to dent it. Use a piece of wood and a hammer after the yoke's off. You need to replace it anyways if it's crooked.

Alright. May just have the mechanic look at it for inspection since it's going in after a week or so.
