Preping Plasic

planin on paintin some of the plastic peices in my truck this weekend...my question is what do you all think is the best way to prep the plastic?

radio bezel and try to remove the cup holer/cubey hole on the floor

 

you'll need to sand them some to get the rubber coating off of the radio bezel..... then wash with soap and water and then rub down with rubbing alcohol and let dry then paint.....

 

ok i fig id need to sand em down just havent ever painted plasic so didnt know bout the extra stuff

 

yeah if you get krylon fusion paint i will bond with the plastic and doesnt really peel or bubble....

its scewed into floor i believe

 

i am not sure hit member hooligan or redneck_ranger.... they both have autos and should know how to remover them....

 

PRIMER! Learned this the hard way... I'll show you what happened in the afternoon when I can get on my compooper.

 

what colour you painting em?

 

I have done mine with minimal sanding and leaving the rubber on it. I scuffed it up, cleaned it with windex, alloowed it to dry completely then painted it. They came out real good and have lasted for a while. Clear coat prevents chipping as well

 

yeah you can do it with the rubber on but the rubber chips very easily

This is what happened when my idiot self didn't prime the paint....

So definitely prime it, sand it, prime it again, and let it dry.

 

No need to prime it, Pete, you sprayed it on too thick and probably didnt use an ammonia based cleaner to clean it before painting. You need to do light coats, that is why yours ran and shows orange peel

 

Used alcohol and did light coats. This is what turned out lol. But priming brings out the color more as well. Just throwing that out there.

 

Use the DuPont Adhersion promoter then paint.
Never used primer on anything plastic.

Primer should work with the Adhersion Promoter too.

 

sorry to bump a old thread but i have some questions regarding this topic and figured i would post here instead of making a new one.

what grit do you guys recommend for sanding the radio bezel and the door bezel that surrounds the handle? im thinking of painting them blue to match my exterior.

 

i say sand down, primer, sand more, paint, clear coat
