So I just noticed that my rear diff. has a small leak, it seems to be coming from where it's connected at the bottom. It was sometime last month I had the Pinion Seal replaced. And the leak looks different then that time.. Just startin to get tired of problem after problem, I loove this truck, but Can only take so much,.. Have to get engine worked on too.. Anyway any ideas of what this leak could be from?...

Possibly a bad job on resealing the different cover if you had them drain it? Or is it in the same location as the pinion?

The old gasket might not have been totally scraped off before the new seal was applied.

  5. Might be the cover seal if it's leaking from the bottom of the diff is leaking. And I know how you feel with the problem after problem thing man. Same $hit happened to me where I needed CV axles and a brand new front diff at the same time. So I know how you're feelin' bro

Did you let the gasket material set up a couple minutes before you installed the cover? Also, you cant torque those bolts too tight or the gasket will just squeeze out.

    Thanks Guys!
It looks like its coming from the bottom of the diff. So the seal might be bad, Ill be callin the mechanic this week to get it back in.. Sux havin one day off.. But Im almost to the point of accepting trading her in, Id love another Ranger.. But I also want a car.. Anyway ill keep u all updated.

  8. Don't trade it bro. Trucks need work constantly if you use them. Trust me, I went through the same issues where something was either broke or leaking every weekend.

If you perform general maintenance and do a quick walk around and check every week your doin pretty good.

Get under the truck (jack it up and put on jack stands if needed) loosen the top bolts of the diff cover then remove the lower 4 or 5 when they are out you can either take a screwdriver, knife, scraper and pull the bottom loose to allow gear oil to drain into a drain pan. When finished draining remove remaining bolts and pull diff cover off. Let it set for a while to stop draining clean gasket surface with a putty knife to get it really clean. Clean gasket surface on diff cover the same way. Then either get a gasket or some loctite gasket maker silicone and go around the gasket surface on the diff cover. Smooth out with finger to cover entire gasket surface wait about 10 minutes and then put diff cover back on rearend. Replace bolts and tighten. Let set for a couple more minutes and fill with fresh gear oil. You fill rearend until it starts to come out of fill hole. Replace fill plug and clean up. I'll try to do a write up this spring when I down my baby.

Yw oh and I'll warn you if you have a posi unit or a limited slip diff you will need to add the friction modifier. And the gear lube will smell like old cat piss.

Mine leaks as well. Sometimes you have to get on those bolts and really torque them on for a good seal

You should NEVER overtorque those bolts. If they're too tight, they wont seal properly.

or you could actually snap the bolt off in the rearend and then unless you know of an easy way to get it out your totally screwed...... what are you using to seal it clinton?
