My Exhaust Opinion

El Camino Man

Thank The Lord For BBFs!
Hey guys. Im just gonna put in my $.02 about some exhaust options. I got bored last night and decided to take off my muffler. The best part about newer Rangers (and maybe older ones too... I dunno) is that part of the exhaust is bolted on after the pipes converge into one. This means all you have to do is unbolt it and take it off the hangers and its free! I fired the beats up to hear its new mighty roar and... it sounds like garbage!!! I do not like it at all lol. Good thing Iv got a Thrush muffler on the way :thumbup1:

Ill keep ya guys updated! It should get here around Monday or Tuesday

I do like the sound of some V8 pushrod straight pipes but OHC or DOHC sound better with some type of aftermarket exhaust. I am getting a Gibson dual eventually as well :)

Don't say they sound better with an after market exhaust lol. My DOHC eclipses both sounded badass with straight pipe.

I guess my opinion is different from everyone elses around here lol. My gf thinks it sounds awesome and Iv had one other compliment too. I think it sounds like hollow farts lol.

I also noticed something kinda... stupid. After the manifold, the exhaust is probablly a 2 1/2" pipe, runs along and merges into a single 2 1/2" pipe. Then it goes until it gets to a place where it bolts on and drops to a 2"ish pipe, runs through the muffler and out to a 2 1/2" pipe and of course flares on the end for a 3"ish tip. Make sense? Wtf was Ford thinkin on this one?

Welp got my Thrush put on. I ran it dumped for awhile because I didnt have time to put the axle hump section on and it sounded pretty decent.

I just got done puttin the back part on and its definitly quieter than I expected. Might just be because I dont have any drone lol. As for sound, its alright. Cheap muffler, decent results. It might sound better when I throw a y-pipe on and some tips one of these days

Enjoy the extra fuel consumption, deafening resonance, and massive loss of power.

But good thing you already put pipes back on. lol. Pickup a turndown at the auto parts store for like $5 and try it out. It'll quiet the drone and interior volume down from a dumped muffler. But if you ask my opinon, Go with a dual out muffler and a new cat-to-muffler pipe with a new flange eliminating that stock choke spot: 2.5" down to 2". A fake Flowmaster would do the trick and is price a little bit more than your basic glasspack.

Alright guys, its been like 4 or 5 days since I put it on and I think Pete was right! (wont hear that too often LOL!). It does seem to have gotten louder and a whole lot "deeper". It sounds awesome at about 40 mph, crusin through town lettin it groan. You can tell its idling now also. When I had the muffler off, it didnt have a tone at idle. My biggest complaint is it doesnt crackle lol. But thats just because I dont have tips on it. I wanna run a y-pipe but theyre pretty expensive and itd look stupid with a single tip IMO

Tired of seein this thread yet lol. I just wanna add one more thing. Yesterday was prom and me and my gf burned almost a half tank of gas in a single day... Anyways, we filled er up and I achieved 16.5 mpg. Doesnt sound like much but Iv never got over 16 in my truck. This means my muffler has definitly freed up some mpg! one of these days, Im gonna replace that restrictive section of 2" pipe that has no reason being in a 2 1/2" exhaust system and that should free up a little more mpg. Ill advise anyone to swap out stock mufflers! Thanks for readin guys!

They say it takes about 6 mths or 1,000 miles for a muffler to really settle in so it will only get better ;)
