Fuel tank replacement

I recently purchased 1987 standard cab 108 inch wheelbase 4x4. I have been surching for a fuel tank that fits. All tanks listed are in the 50 to 51 inch lenghth range. This does not fit my truck as the original is around 44 inches. Does anyone have a solution for this or heard of this. To use the larger available tank requires cutting out a crossmember. Any help on this is appreciated. Thanks

OK, I have resolved the problem. For those out there with a similar issue misinformation seems to be the biggest hurdle. I have asked many people on this and I couldn't get a informed answer. Every web site that I visited to find a replacement tank indicated that the appropriate tank was not for 4x4. This is what caused the confusion. I finally just ordered a tank and yes it did fit. A couple of minor things, was the flange on the driveshaft side had to be bent slightly so it didn't rub on the driveshaft. A very minor adjustment. The other thing noted is that the tank is a little longer and the original skid plate is a little bit short for the new tank. It still bolts in, just that 4 inches are exposed at the front of the tank. Again, no big deal. Thanks to those with input and I hope this helps anyone else with the same problem.

fuel tank

The tank was ordered from our local Lordco auto parts. This is a general fuel tank that can be ordered from any auto parts store. I can't figure out why all the listings I looked up said not for 4x4. All I can do is speculate that it is a disclaimer or something like that.
