Engine making "whooshing" sound

I know I've put threads up about this before, but I can't find the one... The other day I was washing my engine and noticed that the "whooshing" sound it made quieted down when I soaked the pulleys. I let it dry, and then tried just on the pulleys. It seems like either the power steering pump or the alternator (or both) are causing it. I never knew that a pulley could cause the engine to be so loud? I'm leaning towards the psp, but probably gonna try swapping both out over the summer. Has anyone ever encountered an issue like this, or better yet even heard of something like this???? Keep in mind, my truck has a mind of it's own... lol
 
If you're thinking what I'm thinking....the a/c pulley could be causing it? It quiets down when I blast through the mud and when I wash or even wet the engine on the pulleys. Other than that, the whoosh is constantly there. Is there a belt made for the 4.0 that could bypass the a/c compressor?
 
No actually I was thinking the fan clutch is kicking in or stuck causing the fan to spin the same rpm as the motor making the sound.
 
The fan doesn't move freely when the engine's off. But if that's so, why would it quiet down when it gets wet? And the fan clutch is on the water pump
 
I think its all that HP making it sound awesome lol.

But if your fan doesnt move when the trucks off, thats a problem lol. It should slow down as RPM increases. If not it would most definitly cause a woosh. My El Co has a flex fan (solid mounted fan) and it sounds like a helicopter at high RPMs.
 
Maybe I'll try taking it off today and see if it helps. I did want to get an electric fan conversion for it anyways to get a little bit more power out of it.
 
Sounds like the fan any time I slow down mine is winding and it kind of sounds like the breaks are screeching but it's the fan
 
There's the answer...because I tried loosening it and it just slipped around under the belt. Can anyone find me an electric fan conversion kit? I would look, but the transfer case is making progress lol
 
You can use spare wires layin around. Thats what I do lol. Id be interested in learning how to wire up the relays to make em kick on when it gets hot.

I had a electic fan on my El Co but it ran constantly

You can have everything all proper and if you don't use the Ford clutch fan removal tool, the water pump pulley will just spin under the belt. So you solved nothing.

Okay, but why buy some $50 tool when I can use a pair of vice grips and a 35 mm wrench? I think I can handle it with what I got

Tool is $15-20 at any auto parts store and you could probably rent it from them too (O'Reily's). And who in the world would have a 35mm wrench on stand-by?!?!?!????
