difference between 28 and 31 spline limited slip

I think maybe just the planetary gears are different. The ring and pinion will be the same. So, the question is, is the carrier the same from 28 to 31?

Lol you guys... The reasong they call them 31 and 28 spline axles is because of the axleshafts being different splines. Carriers ARE the same. At least the open carriers are.

You should be able to use your spider gears into the 31 spline carrier. I did not notice a difference in the spiders when I replaced my open with an L'S

Spider gears ARE different. That's what has the splines on that the axle shaft slides into.

yeah yeah I know that. What Im saying is, if the carriers are the same, 28 spline spiders would fit in the 31 spline carrier. Im not 100% on open and L/S carriers tho. If the spiders are the same.

He could buy a 31 spline L/S (carrier with spiders, clutches and spring) dissasemble. Install his 28 spline spiders and have L/S. (as long as open to L/S spiders are the same)

I haven`t found an easy or straight answer yet .. I`ve got a 02 ranger 4.0 auto 4x4 it`s geared 4:10 open with drum brakes and a 01 explorer with 4.0 auto 4x4 geared 3:73 with disc brakes .Do these both have 31 spline axles ? I want to change them both to limited slip . I keep getting asked what spline count do I have ,I found 1 site that showed later model years with the 4.0 have 31 spline . How can I find out without opening up the rearends ?

The Ex may have the LS already.
The axle housing from the Ex will fit the ranger, with minor mods, but don't fool around with the spider gears, not really worth the trouble.
For the time and money, swap in an Ex axle housing and get 31 spline axles and a LS.

I have a 31 spline LS for sale if you need one.
