2002 4.0 at idle everything looks good. above 2000 rpm guage drops and battery light comes on. this happens moving or sitting still. installed new battery, belt, tensioner and 3 different alternators - no change. has anyone had a similar problem or have an idea what is causing this?

Welcome to the forum. EEEWWW...I have never heard this. Check your main lines for tears or breaks would be my first guess. Have someone check the computer and GEM module
you may have a ground strap that has came off some place in the engine bay. i also would check that you main cables are not torn or cut. check the connection to the ALT and the starter. you may want to check that you have all of the main wiring connections tight. after time some can get loose. by what your say'n it sound to me like a ground problem tho welcome
problem solved. it was the alternator. broken connection on rotor. when rpm increased centrifugal force caused connector to separate.
