I have a 2004 Ford Ranger 4.0 v-6 4x4, when shifting the rpms stay high most of the time, making it harder to get in gear. Any help would be appreciated. Help

Do the RPM's drop to idle, just as you come to a stop? I get that from time to time. I used to get it all the time, but the more I drive my truck, the less that occurs. I've been told to pull the fresh air duct and spray carb cleaner / injector cleaner into the throttle body / intake. Don't know if it works, as I never tried it.
