Is there any way to disable the freewheeling effect in the transmission so the truck will hold itself back going downhill? Its a 2001 ranger edge 4x4

Are you referring to a manual transmission or an automatic?

This might sound a bit facetious, but have you tried downshifting to the next lower gear?

Yes and it doesn't hold back like a normal automatic when you downshift unless you give it gas. I have never drove another vehicle that does this it's weird

    That Is strange.
I gotta hand this one off to the dealer and have them look at it.
Maybe you could call the service dept. and just talk to the advisor and see if its just a Ranger thing, or if you actually have a problem.

Just looked back over our conversation. Have you ever had the tranny serviced?
Not tough, just drain the fluid and change the filter, then fill it back up.
Could be low on fluid or old ("watery") fluid....of course, if that were the case, you'd think you'd have other problems on top of just coasting too fast down a hill.
odd that you have to push on the gas to get it to grab and start braking, too.

My dad has had the tranny gone through a couple times and they said it looks fine. It doesn't throw any codes on the computer. So I'm really not sure what he can do about it. He has had the truck for about 8 years and it's done that from the time he brought it home. Its a great little truck and we take it places out hunting most people wouldn't believe a little ranger could go. We have never had a problem other than that. It's just a small inconvenience when he is off road

So it sounds like its been serviced and the dealer has already looked at it.
Sounds like he just need to down shift a gear or maybe two, when he starts going down the hill.
Might not be the most satisfactory answer, but as the dealer has already told him, there's nothing wrong with his tranny.
Wish I could offer more insight, but my Ranger is a manual. I have to shift a lot, too. only going uphill with me. ;)
    Good luck.
