    ZRanger28 Got boost?

could be your IACV is getting dirty and sticking slightly , that would cause roughness in the idle, both my 94's i have had to clean them and then they idle like champs

just need a can of carb clean/ throttle body clean, unbolt it and spray it out, rub it clean on the inside with ear swabs until its clean, let dry and then reinstall.

it may help, but it certanly wont hurt either

I agree, when you clean it, DO NOT USE A SOLVENT! I ruined 2 of them that way lol

    I have a 99 2wd, 2.5/5speed.

Similar issues, but occasionally will crank/start/die.

I know my ex's Explorer would do this/similar, and it ended up being the Idle Air Control. I'd have to clean it every couple years.
    .

A few cranks, and it will start again, or little "ether" will speed this process. Using the "spray start" method, she fires up, without hesitation, and runs without issue.

Is there anything else I should consider?

It's a little rustbucket that I paid $700 for last fall, it's was occasionally reading maf codes (that I think could easily have been vac issues), the engine is currently running open at the exhaust manifold-- as the cat rusted off.

It surprisingly has run all summer like that, without appreciable change if fuel economy. It's noisy, but.. I'm nearly deaf, and surprisingly even the highway patrol hasn't complained. (so far)

The air cleaner has less than 5000 miles on it, looked okay..

I replaced the fuel filter a few weeks ago, pressure tested the pump.. It was consistently just over 60psi. It held pressure fairly well when the engine was shut off.

I've sprayed pb blaster on the IAC bolts, mhmm. There's rust on those, too..

I'll spray start it all winter, if that's my only "cost efficient" option. It doesn't detonate or otherwise seem to be adverse to a little huff of the stuff. Since I don't really "care" about the truck, I usually just spray it behind the passenger headlight.

She's been a good little truck for what I've paid, but it would be throwing "good money after bad" to do "much" in terms of repair.

It isn't leaking or using oil, or anything else for that matter. The a/c even worked.

But.. It's NWOhio, and the rustmonster has just made a snack of her.
