I just got news that my Ranger needs a main seal. Oil light went on so I took it in and got this news. Don't notice any oil in the garage. Seal is cheap, labor isn't to get to it the transmission has to be removed. Can I limp along with this by keeping extra oil handy? Also, how long should brake pads last on this truck. I replaced 11000 miles ago and they say it needs new front brakes again. Honestly, the truck is driven mostly by 18 year old boy who likes to wait until the last minute to brake! Any suggestions for me ( Mom ) would be helpful. He loves this truck!:eek:

if the rear main is leaking you will see oil on the floor, I would take it for a second opinion, sounds fishy to me.
 
If your not seeing a lot of oil on the ground, then it's not that bad.
I had a truck with a bad seal, the body fell off before the engine gave out.
Just remember to check the oil and keep it up in the full area on the stick.
I checked every other fill up.
11000 miles seem a little early. Lots of times the float pins will stick..keeping the caliper from reacting to braking and may cause the pads to ride the rotor more then they should. always a good idea make sure they move in and out when you replace the pads.

Yep get a second O. I drove a truck till the body fell off with a bad rear main seal. I checked the oil every other fill up. It was losing less then a QT between fills...not great for the enviorment but labor is costly. Might be something the kid could learn..also check with schools and colleges...sometimes their Auto shop classes will do it for cost of parts and a lot less labor.

11000 hmm there are a few reasons for brakes to wear faster then they should. Did a shop do the pads before?
 
Thanks and I agree. Yes Big O Tires did the last brake job. I think they see me coming at this point. They know my son drives the vehicle and I am usually willing to make sure the truck is as reliable as possible. Overall, I have been happy with the repairs, maintenance and customer service though. Very convenient.
 
how bad does it leak? if it"s not real bad try this stuff called mainstay, you have to go to an auto parts store for it, put in 1 bottle and leave it in for 3000 miles, stopped a leak on an old car I had once. it"s only about 6 bucks, its worth a try, and no it won"t hurt the motor.
 
As far as the brakes go, it sounds like your rear brakes are not working properly and the fronts are doing all of the work.
 
The brakes on my 96 seem to do the same thing. Is there any way to adjust the brake bias without getting new parts?
