I have a 2003 ranger 3.0 edge 2wd. Last night it stranded me and my bf on a highway. It stalled going up a slight incline and I was able to get it to the shoulder.
Tried starting it multiple times, checked wires, battery, shook up the gas, no go. It had a 1/4 tank of gas.

So called AAA at 11:45pm, for either a tow or gas, waited an hour cop showed up, aaa got there finally at 1:18, 2 minutes after the police tow came
So aaa put gas in, still no go. Aaa had 4 other calls so police tow dragged me to a gas station where I waited until 4am for a tow truck.

It has gas, plugs wires and pcv just changed little over a year ago, fuel filter replaced about two months ago.

    Any ideas?

could be a number of things, maybe you had a coil pack go out, plugged fuel filter, fuel pump went out, also check the fuel cut off switch, its either behing the passenger side kick panel, or up near the firewall on the passenger foot well, sometiles it can become unplugged

a 3.0 does have one big coil pack, that all the wires plug into on top of the engine (towards the firewall, passenger side). however if that failed usually it would cause a missfire on one cylinder, making the truck run like crap but it will run (i've been there, lol).

i would check the plug and wire harness on the camshaft position sensor, down on the front of the engine. the camshaft position sensor (CPS) is what controlls all engine spark, sending the signal to the coil pack telling it which cylinder to fire.

my buddie has a '98 with the 3.0 engine, and the plug on his CPS was starting to deteriorate, causing the truck to randomly die and not start (it would crank perfectly fine though). we had to get a used plug from the junkyard (not available new) but once it was fixed he never had an issue with it again.
