Yes switching to manual hubs is a good way to do it and a guaranteed good look and function, but this is so simple to do and you dont have to get in and out of the truck to change it. I personally always drove in 2wd and if I absolutely needed 4wd I didnt have to park to get in it just flip a switch. This is the same write up I used and very detailed information.

a set of manual hubs are only like $150 and they will out last your auto hubs twice over. you can also lock them before you need to use 4wd and drive in 2wd with the hubs locked. also with manual hubs, you can leave them unlocked and put your truck in 4lo and you will be in 2wd low range which is awesome to pop up a curb, drive up car ramps or pull a boat up a boat ramp. manual hubs are by far the best mod i have done to my truck

i agree give us a link cuz i like my free fix because i had no 4wd before i did it but if i could find manual hubs with a cheap price id probly get them. i had no 4wd before because of a vacum leak that i cant seem to find.

Mine is a '99. When I flip my switch into 4wd it sometimes does not work. The colder the weather the more likely it is to fail... ( generally when I need it most ) So that switch, and the little electric motor that it's connected to, controls "using vacumn lines to lock the hubs" and casuse' the t-case to begin sending power to the front end? Is it usually the hub locking part that is failing? If getting manual hubs would ensure I had 4wd when I needed it ( and lo range ) I'd do that in a heartbeat.

Yes, sdowiat, the manual hubs eliminate the guesswork regarding, "Did my hubs engage this time or not?" I bought my '99 a year ago, and that's the first modification I made.
I have had numerous 4x4's, and very much prefer manual hubs. If the weather is messy I just leave them locked.

Very cool I just pull the hub out and lock in manually since the vacuum system don't work on mine this is much simpler

But what about the low range...? Turning the switch does two things, engage the hubs (which the manual hubs will solve ) and it allows you to select low range. When you are having this problem, is the problem solely the engagement of the hubs or is the ability to select low range affected as well?

Also, If I switch to manual hubs will that hinder the ability to go into low?

My ranger goes into 4wd and 4 low no problem just doesn't engage or disengage the hubs
