97 Explorer Message Center, it has a length of wire attached to the backside for you to wire it into your truck. I was going to install it in mine but then installed the shorty console and did away with that plan.

It has a bunch of functions. These are the ones I can remember right now:

Distance traveled
Distance to empty
Instantaneous fuel economy
Average fuel economy

Systems Monitor
Charging system
Low oil level
Low fuel level
Low washer fluid level
High coolant temp
Oil change reminder

Selectable metric or English units
 
do you think the screen could be taken out and the hole be modded for a storage pocket? and could the buttons be modded to run like lights or something
 
There is a different insert for the same full length console that was used on Explorers without the Message Center. It already has a storage pocket.

I believe that the MC buttons are "momentary on" pushbuttons. A pushbutton like that would need a set of 4 relays to convert it to an on-off switch.
