Hi Doug, welcome. I haven't heard of using the ignition key for resetting your CEL (check engine light). One thing that I do when I need to do something like this is to disconnect the negative battery cable for 20 minutes and that automatically resets the computer. If your CEL still comes on see what code is thrown. If you or someone you know has a code reader connect it and see what could be the cause of the light. Some auto parts stores will do this for free so you can try that also. I disconnect my battery every 5000 miles or so just to refresh the computer settings. Found that helps, but it takes a few hundred miles for the computer to settle in and do a good job of controlling your engine systems.
